A highly anticipated Road to UFC flyweight final has been canceled after a controversial weigh-in incident involving Aaron Tau.
Tau was scheduled to face Namsrai Batbayar this weekend, with the bout set to open the early prelims of UFC 325.
Instead, the matchup was scrapped entirely following what officials deemed an attempted weigh-in violation.
Tau, who has not yet officially signed with the UFC, was the final fighter to step on the scales during weigh-ins.
Initially, he weighed in behind a curtain – a measure sometimes allowed to remove the weight of clothing as a last resort – and registered 122.25 pounds, an astonishing 3.75 pounds under the non-title flyweight limit.
The result immediately raised eyebrows.
Live commentators questioned whether Tau had manipulated the scale by grabbing the towel, a controversial tactic previously associated with Daniel Cormier.
Officials quickly intervened, removed the curtain, and instructed Tau to weigh in again, this time in full view.
On the second attempt, the scale read 129 pounds, placing him three pounds over the allowable limit.
Shortly afterward, UFC commentator Jon Anik announced that the bout had been officially canceled.
For context, the “towel trick” gained notoriety in 2017 at UFC 210, when Cormier initially weighed in heavy before making championship weight on a second attempt – later revealed to involve resting his hands on the towel to reduce scale pressure.
Aaron Tau just tried pulling the DC towel trick at the weigh-ins and failed 😬
