UFC Veteran Criticizes UFC For Promoting “Guys Who Smoke Weed” Instead Of Guys Like Merab Dvalishvili

Former UFC lightweight contender Al Iaquinta is calling on the UFC to rethink how it promotes its athletes, arguing that the organization is placing the spotlight on the wrong role models.

In a discussion with UFC commentator Jon Anik, Iaquinta expressed concern about the cultural influence of fighters and the messages being sent to younger fans:

Sports change society… Whatever sports do, we affect the culture so much.

He criticized the UFC for elevating fighters with flashy or controversial lifestyles, saying:

UFC promotes the guy that smokes weed, and all these little kids are smoking weed and have pink hair.

Instead, Iaquinta pointed to bantamweight contender Merab Dvalishvili as an example of discipline, work ethic, and clean living…
Qualities he believes should be highlighted more often:

If UFC wanted, they could change the world.
They could go: “Look at Merab — he doesn’t drink, he doesn’t smoke, he works hard.”

Known for his relentless cardio and pressure-heavy style, Dvalishvili has climbed the ranks with an impressive winning streak and the respect of fans and peers alike.

But despite his accomplishments, Iaquinta feels he hasn’t received the promotional push he deserves:

How many kids in the audience have pink hair? You could change the world for a better place if you could get behind this dude.
