While most people know Tom Hardy for his gritty on-screen roles, the Hollywood star has been quietly building a reputation in an entirely different arena — Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
In 2022, Hardy surprised fans and fellow martial artists alike by stepping onto the competition mats in Wolverhampton and Milton Keynes, walking away with gold medals at both events.
For Hardy, Jiu-Jitsu presents a raw, humbling kind of challenge — one that feels far more daunting than even the biggest film sets.
Here is what he had to say in an interview with Esquire:
Going down the local sports centre to fight some bloke from Southampton or Milton Keynes who you’ve never met before is terrifying!
And people are watching, and they’ve got their phones out, and it could be embarrassing. It could end really badly.
Now a purple belt, Hardy has fully committed to the lifestyle. When his filming schedule is light, he trains up to five times a week.
Even when things pick up, he still carves out time on Sundays to stay connected to the sport.
With his schedule clear for the next six months, Hardy plans to focus entirely on Jiu-Jitsu before returning to filming in October for the second season of MobLand.
Other projects, including possible sequels to Mad Max and Taboo, are on hold as he prioritizes his training.
So what keeps him coming back?
For Hardy, it’s about more than just the physical battle — it’s a lesson in humility, control, and self-discovery:
It’s a submission sport. It’s about stopping your opponent. They submit to defeat, or you choke them, shutting off the carotid artery so the blood doesn’t go to the brain.
But once you isolate a limb — an arm or a leg — and put pressure through the joint, and it’s correctly applied, you needn’t go any further.
It’s done. You are done. Only your ego will take you any further.
That constant struggle against ego has become a personal philosophy for Hardy, both on and off the mats:
I genuinely am keen to take on the painful journey of being brave enough to try something new…
Because I’d like to not look back and say: “I regret not making the effort to do something that was scary.”
