Tom DeBlass Sends Strong Message To Non-Competitive BJJ Students: “Be Selective”

Tom DeBlass has shared an important reminder for non-competitive BJJ practitioners…

One that shifts the focus away from performance and back toward longevity & safety.

In a recent Instagram post, DeBlass emphasized that not every student is training to compete – and that reality should shape how they approach their time on the mats:

Non-competitive Jiu-Jitsu students…
You have every right to be selective about who you train with.

DeBlass made it clear that the mindset of “having to roll with everyone” can be dangerous, especially for those who are training for health, enjoyment, or long-term development rather than medals:

Avoid the ones who move without control. Avoid the ones driven by ego. Avoid the ones who show up just to “win” rounds.
If you want longevity, this matters more than anything.

The right training partners will build you. The wrong ones will break you.

DeBlass also addressed the role of instructors in shaping gym culture.
Ideally, a coach should create a safe and controlled environment, where students can grow without unnecessary risk:

Your instructor should create a safe environment.

But if they don’t… That responsibility becomes yours.
Protect your body. Protect your future.
