Tom DeBlass has highlighted a message he believes every Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner needs to hear – your value on the mats has nothing to do with competition.
In a recent social media post, DeBlass emphasized that hobbyists form the backbone of the sport and deserve just as much respect as elite athletes:
I have said this many times through the years, but it is important that my new followers see it too.
To all my jiu jitsu friends around the world, it does not matter if you are not a competitor.
You are equally important to the art of jiu jitsu.Without you, we have nothing.
DeBlass explained that most people who step into an academy never plan to compete:
At my academy, around ninety percent of the people never have dreams of competing, and that is perfectly fine.
I love it that way.
He argued that the passion and consistency of everyday practitioners is what keeps Jiu-Jitsu alive both culturally and economically:
What would we do without the people who simply love jiu jitsu?
What would competitors do without you?
The stands would be empty, no one would watch, and the art itself would fade.
DeBlass also revealed that some of the most dedicated students he has trained never once stepped onto a tournament mat – and he considers that a powerful sign of true passion:
When you are not chasing medals and still show up day in and day out, it means you truly love jiu jitsu at its core.
I appreciate you for that.
