In July 2022, Jim Walter faced a nightmare few could imagine.
Attacked with a knife in a brutal assault that took the lives of his mother and grandmother, Walter barely survived — and he credits his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training for saving his life.
His instructor, Jay Valko, recalled what happened:
Jim sent me a text from a hospital bed, thanking me for the jiu-jitsu techniques that saved his life.
Despite sustaining critical injuries to his sternum, heart, liver, head, ear, and eye, Walter managed to disarm his attacker.
Before the attack, Walter was a well-known figure in the MMA world, managing elite fighters like former UFC champions Chris Weidman, Stipe Miočić, and Anthony Smith.
But the past two years have been spent fighting a very different kind of battle — one against both the physical scars and the emotional trauma left behind.
Valko shares:
Despite everything he’s been through, Jim is still resolved to reclaim the life that was almost taken from him. Jim is too proud to ask for help. I am asking for help on his behalf.
The GoFundMe campaign aims to raise $50,000 to cover medical bills, rehabilitation costs, day-to-day living expenses, and legal fees.
So far, $6,000 has been raised, but the need remains great.
Those close to Walter speak of his remarkable resilience in the face of tragedy.
As said by Valko:
Every dollar and share will make a difference towards Jim’s recovery.
