Sebastian Brosche, founder of Yoga for BJJ, has shared his thoughts on who should be teaching the classes for beginners…
And in his opinion, it is not BJJ black belts – but rather blue belts!
Here is what he had to say on the topic in a recent conversation on the Grappler’s Perspective podcast:
I believe the best Jiu-Jitsu teacher for beginners are blue belts.
If you take a blue belt that is good at teaching, they’re going to teach a much better beginner’s class than a black belt.
Why so? Well, Brosche says that while black belts have years of experience, they often suffer from “expert bias” – meaning their deep understanding of the art can make it difficult for them to empathize with beginners who are struggling with the fundamentals.
In contrast, blue belts have only recently navigated the early challenges of Jiu-Jitsu themselves and so can more effectively relate to new students:
The blue belt just went through the journey, they have all the relatable stories still fresh in their mind, and they’re really motivated to help because they’re still excited about Jiu-Jitsu.
