Ryron Gracie, grandson of Grandmaster Helio Gracie and son of Rorion Gracie, has spent his entire life immersed in Jiu-Jitsu.
Iin a recent conversation on the Ageless Warrior Lab podcast with host Dave Meyer, he made a point aimed squarely at competitive grapplers…
Saying that high-intensity competition is only a brief chapter in a much longer relationship with the art:
Those things, if you want to practice them, are a short phase of your life.
Could be for some people 15, 20, 25 years, but for most it’s not. It’s like 8 years, 7 years, 10 years where you might compete in MMA or in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments.
The issue, in his view, is that many practitioners become so tied to the competitive side of training that once that window closes, they abandon Jiu-Jitsu entirely, never realizing there’s a different approach built to last a full lifetime:
One thing you can do for 70 years, from seven years old all the way to 77 or 80 years old, is Jiu-Jitsu the way Helio Gracie practiced Jiu-Jitsu.
Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense is Jiu-Jitsu with the mindset of I do what I can, not what I want.
It’s patience. It’s timing. It’s leverage.
For Ryron, once a grappler moves past chasing points and submissions and starts training with longevity and practicality in mind, the art becomes something that continues to grow rather than something that ends:
People sometimes start doing something. They start becoming very sportive competitors in Jiu-Jitsu, and that’s fun.
But then when that ends, they might fall off all Jiu-Jitsu, they stop practicing, where reality is just because you’re whatever age you are doesn’t mean, oh, you’re 57, you don’t want to compete anymore because you hurt your knee twice.
Great. Keep doing something from 57 all the way to 77 or 87 years old.
