Ryan Hall: “I Think The Shrimp Is Not A Real Move”

Ryan Hall has never been afraid to challenge conventional thinking – and his latest comments follow that line of thought.

In a recent interview, the former UFC featherweight made a bold claim…
That he doesn’t believe “shrimping” — one of BJJ’s most universally taught movements — is actually a legitimate technique.

Here is what he had to say on the topic:

I think the shrimp is not a real move.
It’s a giant spiel and seizure to show in person.

There’s a lot of things that we think of as fundamental (in Jiu-Jitsu) that I think are really pretty negative.

For those less familiar, shrimping involves scooting the hips away from an opponent while lying on your back — a foundational movement used to create space and escape bad positions.

When the interviewer suggested that questioning shrimping borders on heresy in Jiu-Jitsu circles, Hall didn’t back down:

It’s like a really athletic looking position where you look like someone that’s trying to stick their butt out on Instagram, and then you push your hands away and you expose your face, and then you lay on your side because someone told you to do that.
