Rodrigo Comprido Explains Why Judo Struggles To Grow While Jiu-Jitsu Thrives

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros recently broke down one of the most overlooked distinctions between judo and Jiu-Jitsu, explaining why one martial art has become a global business success while the other remains far less accessible.

Speaking on the Connectcast podcast, Comprido argued that judo’s culture of relentless performance has both defined its excellence and limited its appeal:

Judo is performance…

If you don’t perform, you’re discarded. Goodbye.

This ruthless meritocratic mindset, he explained, fosters elite competitors but alienates casual practitioners and adults who discover the sport later in life:

Have you ever seen a white belt in judo over 20 years old?
You don’t have it.

The person who goes to judo and doesn’t perform is discarded.

During his time training with Brazil’s Olympic judo team at Vasco da Gama, Comprido witnessed the sport’s demanding environment firsthand.

He recalled the brutal physical toll judo takes, especially on those who start late:

Falling all the time is impossible when you’re older.

That’s where he believes jiu-jitsu succeeded—by being inclusive and adaptive.

The “gentle art” allows practitioners to continue learning even through injury, age, or physical limitations.
