Rayron Gracie won gold in the brown belt absolute division at the 2023 IBJJF World Championships!
And, in an interview with the Gracie Mag, he explained that his mindset played a crucial role in the success:
I thought: “I can’t take second place anymore.”
I knew I was more than capable of achieving the gold medal and I kept that thought in mind.
There are crucial moments where the ability to create extreme willpower within oneself combined with refined technique decides the fight.
Defeats, Rayron emphasizes, had a big influence on the outcome:
Each of the defeats was essential for my evolution and I was able to analyze in detail the mistakes made.
Since then, I’ve been working on improving those areas, which led me to become absolute world champion this year.
No defeat is pleasant, but they provide unparalleled energy and willpower.
But will the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA community see him following in his cousin’s, Roger Gracie‘s, footsteps when it comes to fighting in the octagon?
Not anytime soon, it appears.
Rayron is focused on his gi career because, as he emphasized, it’s the “essence” of what Jiu-Jitsu is about:
My focus is on the gi.
I believe that lies the true essence of Jiu-Jitsu and the great beauty of the sport.
