Pedro Alex has been suspended for one year from competing in IBJJF events after failing a PED test.
Known for victories over top names like Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu and Roberto Jimenez, Alex had been building a solid reputation since earning his black belt in 2020.
His career reached a high point this year when he secured a silver medal in the ultra heavyweight division at the IBJJF World Championship 2024.

However, that achievement has now been overshadowed by his suspension.
USADA revealed that Alex tested positive for clomiphene and its metabolite ((Z)-3′-hydroxyclomiphene) during an in-competition drug test conducted at the 2024 World Championship.
After accepting the anti-doping violation, Alex received a one-year ban, which started on July 12th, 2024, the date of his provisional suspension.
He has also been stripped of any awards or titles earned after June 2nd, 2024, including his silver medal from this year’s World Championship.
Yatan Bueno, who defeated Alex in the finals and initially took home the gold, also tested positive for a banned substance and was stripped of his title.
Therefore, with both the gold and silver medalists disqualified, the IBJJF now faces a unique situation – in deciding what to do with the results of the ultra heavyweight division.
