Dima Murovani, current coach of B-Team Jiu-Jitsu and therefore Nicky Ryan as well, revealed the challenging circumstances leading up to Ryan’s performance at the recent Craig Jones Invitational (CJI).
Murovani shared that Ryan faced significant physical setbacks during his preparation for CJI:
When I entered the camp 10 weeks ago, Nicky Ryan couldn’t walk.
His ACL buckled, and on the other leg, Craig Jones broke his foot.
Essentially, Ryan was training without the full use of his legs for a considerable portion of the camp.
Despite these severe limitations, Ryan’s determination remained unwavering:
Nicky Ryan did come into train every day with basically no legs.
In the final four weeks leading up to the event, Ryan’s training was drastically limited:
He couldn’t walk at all…
We couldn’t continue training. He didn’t train for four weeks.
Ryan only managed to come in once a week for a single round to maintain some level of fitness, but this was far from ideal preparation for a high-level competition.
Which is, alongside the spectacular performance by his opponent Andrew Tackett, he didn’t fare long in CJI.
