MMA Pioneer Caol Uno Promoted To BJJ Black Belt At 50 Years Old

Japanese MMA pioneer Caol Uno has been promoted to black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 50!

While the promotion may come later in life, Uno has been operating at an elite grappling level for decades.

A true veteran of the sport, he made his professional MMA debut in 1996, at a time when modern MMA was still taking shape.
Like many Japanese fighters of that era, Uno emerged through Shooto, where he won one of the promotion’s earliest amateur tournaments before turning professional.

As his career progressed, Uno competed extensively on the Japanese regional circuit, winning Shooto’s welterweight title and building a reputation as one of the most well-rounded fighters in the country.
By the time he was signed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2001, Uno held a 12–3–2 record that included seven submission victories.

He immediately challenged Jens Pulver for the inaugural UFC lightweight title and remained with the promotion for several bouts, including his legendary draw with BJ Penn in the final of the UFC Lightweight Grand Prix.

Uno’s grappling credentials extended well beyond MMA.
In 1999, he earned a silver medal at ADCC World Championships at under 77 kilograms, cementing his status as one of the top submission grapplers of his generation.

After returning to Japan in 2004, Uno continued competing against elite opposition, facing names such as Shinya Aoki, Joachim Hansen, and Gesias Cavalcante.
Aside from a brief three-fight return to the UFC, he spent the remainder of his career competing primarily in Japan.

Even into his late forties, Uno has remained active.
His most recent appearance came at Shooto Torao 37, where he delivered a great performance to earn a unanimous decision win over Akihiko Mori.
