Mikey Musumeci Says He Got Stronger For BJJ When He Stopped Lifting Weights

Mikey Musumeci has once again sparked debate in the martial arts world – not through a flashy submission, but by challenging long-held beliefs about strength training.

In a resurfaced interview from the Joe Rogan Experience, the 25-year-old BJJ star revealed that he completely stopped lifting weights and doing conditioning.
The result, according to Musumeci, was improved performance:

When I stopped lifting weights and doing conditioning I actually got stronger in training because I started learning how to become more efficient with how I use my body.

In an era where most elite grapplers prioritize intense strength and conditioning regimens, Musumeci’s comments defy the norm.
He believes that building a game reliant on strength creates a false sense of security and prevents athletes from developing truly efficient technique:

All the people I’m competing against are so strong and I didn’t want to have to rely on strength with them or to overpower them.

I wanted to make my jiu-jitsu where it doesn’t matter the strength – where (what) matters (is) your body positioning.

By eliminating external strength work, Musumeci says his body moves with greater fluidity, and his precision and timing have reached new levels.
His minimalist approach has helped him dominate opponents who rely on explosiveness and power, reinforcing his belief that mechanics matter more than muscle.

What This Means for You

If you’re a hobbyist, a master’s competitor, or simply someone over 30 trying to stay on the mats pain-free, this message should hit home: you don’t need to be a beast in the gym to become a monster on the mat.

Instead, focus on:

  • Improving positional awareness
  • Practicing transitions under fatigue
  • Studying movement efficiency
  • Rolling consistently (but smart)
  • Staying injury-free

Strength fades. Explosiveness fades. Technique—when cultivated properly—just keeps getting better.
