Mikey Musumeci made headlines during his recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show by revealing that his contract with the UFC has officially expired, leaving him on the verge of free agency.
The news caught even Helwani by surprise, as Musumeci shared the update casually in the middle of their conversation:
My contract’s actually up now with UFC, so I’m up for renegotiation, resigning.
Musumeci went on to confirm that he’s scheduled to meet with UFC executive Hunter Campbell soon to discuss terms for a potential new deal_
Hunter loves me. He’s a big fan.
The reigning UFC BJJ bantamweight champion also offered a candid look at the state of UFC’s grappling division after its first three events.
While some fans have questioned the promotion’s growing pains, Musumeci maintained a positive outlook:
I think it’s expected with only three events how they’re doing things, right? It’s the beginning, right? And they just started it.
We’re moving at an okay pace…
Definitely there’s a lot of learning that they have to do and build because it takes time to do this, right?
Despite the criticism the new division and his own performances have received, Musumeci believes the UFC is fully committed to the project’s long-term growth:
I think they’re all in.
I think that they said they plan to have 10 events next year.
