Mikey Musumeci has addressed criticism surrounding his decision to sign an exclusive deal with UFC BJJ…
Pushing back against claims that he “sold out” and explaining the deeper motivation behind his move.
Here is what he had to say:
I get really upset when someone says that I’m a sellout in these things because I’m actually doing the opposite.
I’m making a platform to help other people. I want people to start Jiu-Jitsu.
Musumeci framed it as part of a broader mission to grow the sport and create opportunities for others:
I already won enough titles in my life that I’m fine, you know what I mean?
I could literally stop competing. So for me, I’m more enjoying now getting people to start Jiu-Jitsu, getting people to have a better platform for their future generation, the next generation, you young kids now, right?
Musumeci emphasized that building something meaningful for future athletes is what now drives him the most:
So these things are what give me fulfillment. And I feel like that’s kind of where I’m at in my life.
And I feel like we got rewarded though, when we didn’t have money, when we didn’t have any of these things, we stayed strong and we stuck to it, we now get to reap those benefits.
