Mikey Musumeci has finally broken his silence after losing the ONE Flyweight Submission Grappling World Title…
On the scales – due to a failed weight cut.
Originally, Musumeci was scheduled to move up in weight to face lightweight champion Kade Ruotolo.
However, Ruotolo was forced to pull out after sustaining an injury during the Craig Jones Invitational.
In an effort to keep Musumeci on the card, ONE Championship quickly arranged a replacement in Bebeto Oliveira – turning the match into a flyweight title defense for Musumeci.
But just when things seemed to be settling, Musumeci failed to make weight and couldn’t pass the hydration test, leading to the loss of his World Title.
Despite criticism of ONE’s handling of the situation, Musumeci took full responsibility for what happened:
I want to clarify that ONE Championship never forced me to do 135 [pounds] for this match.
I’ve always made 135 rather easily, and I was exactly where I needed to be in weight to make it.
He explained how his body failed him during the weigh-ins:
The strangest thing happened: my body wasn’t working anymore when I began to try to sweat.
It shut down.
Musumeci remains grateful for surviving a potentially life-threatening situation:
God has everything happen for a reason – I’m alive today because of how everything turned out.
It wasn’t my time to go yet, and I’m so grateful and fortunate to be alive.
