Mica Galvao Says Dante Leon Used An Illegal Grip At ADCC 2024 To Beat Him

Mica Galvao has spoken out about one of the most surprising outcomes of ADCC 2024 – the match where he was submitted by Dante Leon in the absolute division quarter-final.

And now, nearly a year after that match, Galvao is now alleging that Leon used an illegal grip during the sequence that led to the finish.

It was only the second time Galvao had ever been submitted at black belt.
That shock was amplified by their respective showings in the under 77kg division earlier in the tournament – Galvao captured gold, while Leon exited in the first round.

Now, Galvao is calling for a rematch.

Galvao pointed out that Leon was well-rested after being eliminated early on Saturday, while Galvao had just fought four intense matches – including his gold medal run – before entering the absolute bracket just 30 minutes later.

Galvao admitted to coming in light and unfocused, but says it was his commitment to the fans that pushed him to compete.

What’s more, he claims the finish was made possible by an illegal grip.

According to Galvao, Leon grabbed his belt – something not permitted under ADCC no gi rules, even though Galvao is known for wearing a black belt in no gi matches.
Galvao said the grip helped Leon set up the finishing position and noted that he was nursing a foot injury at the time, which further limited his ability to defend.

He even shared footage that appears to support his claim and said he’s been trying to secure a rematch ever since.
So far, Leon has declined.

Galvao acknowledged that Leon is signed with ONE Championship but pointed out that he’s still active and fighting in AIGA, making the rematch feasible:

I have a lot of respect for Dante, but I hope we’ll meet again.
