Dave Mustaine – the legendary frontman of Megadeth and one of the most influential figures in metal history – has now been promoted to black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!
The 63-year-old received his black belt from Professor Reggie Almeida at Gracie Barra Spring Hill BJJ & Self-Defense in Tennessee, marking the culmination of decades of martial arts dedication.
The achievement comes after a long and disciplined progression through the ranks of BJJ, made even more impressive by the personal battles Mustaine has endured along the way.
He earned his purple belt in 2021 at age 59 shortly after overcoming throat cancer.
Mustaine continued his steady rise, earning brown belt in October 2022, before finally reaching the ultimate milestone this week.
Friend Jon Milan publicly praised the journey, writing:
Congratulations to my friend Dave Mustaine on getting his black belt after a long hard fought road.
I know you have an amazing team with Professor Reggie.
Mustaine’s involvement with martial arts began in the 1990s with Taekwondo, before expanding into a wide range of disciplines.
He eventually earned black belts in both Ukidokan karate and Taekwondo under the legendary Benny “The Jet” Urquidez.
In a past interview, Mustaine explained the diversity of his training:
My sensei — Benny “The Jet” Urquidez — has the style of karate, kung-fu, aikido, judo, jiu-jitsu, Taekwondo, Greco-Roman wrestling, Muay Thai boxing and American boxing.
So it’s all those things rolled into one.
It’s a nine-style discipline. My second black belt is in Songham taekwondo and I was an assistant instructor in that style, and then I taught it privately for a while.
