Mark Zuckerberg recently opened up about his deep dive into martial arts during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience – shedding light on how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA have reshaped his life.
While initially seeking a way to manage stress and stay active, Zuckerberg has developed a genuine passion for combat sports.
He trains every morning, splitting his time between general fitness and MMA sessions that include grappling and striking.
However, his progress hit a bump when he suffered a torn ACL while throwing a leg kick during training – an injury that required surgery.
Reflecting on the injury, Zuckerberg explained how it’s made him more cautious about the physical toll of grappling:
I think tearing the ACL striking is a little more of a fluke, but you’re much more likely to do that grappling.
So, going through the ACL experience didn’t make me want to like just exclusively go do the version (grappling/BJJ) where you’re attacking joints all day long.
Despite this, Zuckerberg remains enthusiastic about MMA, joking:
I can take a few more punches to the face before we go back to that.
One of the more personal moments in the conversation was Zuckerberg’s story about his wife, Priscilla Chan, and her support for his martial arts journey.
Expecting her to discourage him from returning to training after his ACL injury, Zuckerberg was surprised by her response:
She’s like, when you heal your ACL, you better go back.
Sloth Jiu-Jitsu: you can be slow and unathletic and still kick butt in Jiu-Jitsu.
