Mark Kerr Reveals The Split-Second Decision That Earned Him $10,000 & Changed Leo Vieira’s Career

Some moments in combat sports become legendary — not just for athletic feats, but for the decisions that define character.

One of those moments happened at the 2000 ADCC championship, when Mark Kerr, a dominant heavyweight wrestler, faced off against the much smaller Leo Vieira in the absolute division.

On a recent episode of the Jaxxon Podcast with Bear Degiddio and Rampage Jackson, Kerr shared an untold story from that legendary match:

So in ADCC, when you win your weight class, you’re invited to the all-around to determine the champ of champs.

In the all-around, my first match was against Leo, and he’s probably 150, 140 somewhere in there, and I’m weighing 250 pounds.

During the match, Vieira managed to climb onto Kerr’s back in a scramble:

He ends up climbing on top of me. So eventually my arm is in the air and his butt’s on my shoulder.

There’s like an opportunity, like a split second when you watch it, for me to just spike him on his head.
Like literally spike him on his head.

But instead of capitalizing on the moment with a dangerous slam, Kerr paused — thanks to his corner:

I look over in the corner and I see this going like: “Don’t do it, don’t you do it, no, don’t do it.”
And who was it? It was Rico Rodriguez.

So Rico ends up going like: “Don’t do it.”
And so if you watch it, I just bring him back down to the ground.

What Kerr didn’t know at the time was that the tournament’s sponsor had set aside a $10,000 award for sportsmanship.
And his restraint ended up earning him more than just respect:

After the tournament was over, it’s like: “And we’re going to give you $10,000 more dollars for your sportsmanship.’ And I’m like, because I didn’t spike him. I’m like: “Cool, I’ll take it.”

Vieira added:

Honestly, that fight changed my life. For everything – for opportunity, mentally.

Until that, I was a successful jiu-jitsu player, it was my second or third year as a black belt.
But even as a young black belt, I was carrying a lot of uncertainty. I was feeling that I was not good enough in the sport.
