Mackenzie Dern Shares Why Her Daughter Has To Earn A BJJ Black Belt

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu royalty runs deep in Mackenzie Dern’s family – and she believes the legacy will continue through her six-year-old daughter, Moa.

The UFC star and multiple-time world champion recently revealed that she fully expects her daughter to one day become a black belt herself.

When asked if Moa has already started training, Dern smiled and said:

She does Jiu-Jitsu, she has to!

At just six years old, Moa is already immersed in the world of grappling.

Her grandfather, Megaton, was one of the most accomplished competitors of his generation and made history as the first coral belt to compete at the IBJJF World Championship.
Her mother, of course, is one of the most decorated female grapplers ever and a UFC title contender.

But for Dern, her daughter’s path in Jiu-Jitsu isn’t about medals or world championships:

I already spoke about the black belts, she has to get them, you understand?
She has to defend herself, she has to know how to do it.

She emphasized that competing is entirely Moa’s choice:

She doesn’t even have to compete if she doesn’t want to, you understand?
But at least train, so she knows how to defend herself if necessary…

But hopefully, she’s not an MMA fighter.
