Nearly three years after the tragic death of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Leandro Lo, a trial date has finally been set for the man accused of killing him – Military Police Lieutenant Henrique Otavio Oliveira Velozo.
According to Brazilian outlet Metrópoles, the trial is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on May 22, 2025, in São Paulo.
The case has been a painful saga for Lo’s loved ones, who have pushed relentlessly for justice amid long delays.
Lo was fatally shot in August 2022, during a night out at a club in São Paulo.
And, although Velozo was taken into custody almost immediately following the incident, progress toward trial has been slow, with numerous setbacks along the way.
Since his arrest, Velozo has been held at Romão Gomes Military Prison. Initially, he was denied his police salary, but a judge later ruled in his favor, citing the principle of presumption of innocence.
Meanwhile, details about the night of the shooting have been widely reported.
The fatal incident began as a verbal altercation between Lo and Velozo at a nightclub concert. Witness accounts indicate that Velozo approached Lo’s table and that the situation escalated into a physical confrontation.
Lo reportedly took Velozo down and restrained him, eventually allowing him to get back up. That’s when Velozo is alleged to have drawn a firearm and shot Lo in the head.
The crime led to Velozo being indicted on a charge of triple-qualified homicide, which under Brazilian law includes aggravating factors such as a cruel motive, the impossibility of self-defense, and the use of extreme means.
If convicted, Velozo faces a sentence ranging from 12 to 30 years in prison.
