Khabib Nurmagomedov is now focused on life beyond fighting – and part of that mission involves building something bigger than himself in Dagestan.
Speaking from his training base in Sildi, Khabib reflected on how dramatically the region’s profile has grown in recent years:
Even in the current situation, Dagestan has become one of the most visited places in Russia.
There is Sochi, of course, and Kislovodsk, but Dagestan was never on that list before. In the last couple of years, everything has changed.
He pointed to the surge in travel as a clear indicator:
If you look now, there are 20 flights from Moscow every day during the summer. We never had that before.
Dagestan is becoming a very large tourist destination.
According to Khabib, people are drawn to the region for a wide range of reasons:
Tourists come for different reasons. Some come for nature, some for travel and exploration, and others simply to experience something new.
He also highlighted the growing global curiosity about Dagestan’s culture:
If you notice, Americans and Western media are very interested in how children are raised in Dagestan… They are filming documentaries and stories about it.
For Khabib, however, the project is about more than tourism.
His training base is designed to create real opportunities for the local community:
With this base, we are involved in many social projects… But the most important thing is creating jobs.
(For example) one person bought several cows to supply our base with cheese and milk…
She now has her own small business because of this project.
And for him, the motivation is clear:
At this moment, we have certain opportunities… So why not use them for the benefit of the people?
