For many grapplers, wrestling, judo, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu feel like separate worlds…
But according to Justin Flores, the real value comes from understanding how they connect – not how they differ.
Speaking on The Ageless Warrior Lab podcast, Flores explained the fundamental contrast between wrestling and judo using a simple analogy:
To me, like if I’m generalizing, wrestling is like, I’m a hammer, you’re a nail.
Whereas judo is like, I’m going to pour this pitch of water out and the water’s going to gravitate towards the path of least resistance. So, they’re two completely separate ideologies if you take them from their concepts.
But it’s how they mold together.
Rather than choosing one approach over the other, Flores believes the best grapplers blend both:
You could use both in the same exchange…
You could take someone where they don’t want to be taken, but also set traps.I like to relate them to each other – where if they were on like a Venn diagram, that’s how I like to kind of teach.
But when it comes to building a strong foundation – particularly in takedowns – Flores is clear on where to start:
I think wrestling is a great place to start.
The mindset, being able to almost stand where your opponent is standing, rather than to pull them and drag them.
