JT Torres and his academy, Essential Jiu-Jitsu, have officially ended their affiliation with Atos Jiu-Jitsu – becoming one of the latest high-profile departures connected to the ongoing controversy surrounding the team’s leadership.
The announcement was made via a public statement shared on social media by JT Torres, confirming that Essential Jiu-Jitsu and its affiliates will now operate independently.
In the statement, the academy explained its decision clearly and without ambiguity:
In light of recent allegations, my academy and I are officially ending our association with Atos Jiu jitsu.
Atos has been apart of many big moments in my career but also my personal life.
We feel completely shocked and blindsided as do many others that share my same story. I will be forever grateful for my time, teammates , memories and experiences there.
The message emphasized that the decision was rooted in values, reaffirming a commitment to athlete welfare and ethical leadership:
As a coach and leader, providing and maintaining a safe environment is not optional, that same responsibility extends to every person who steps onto the mats.
Our academy will always prioritize safety, respect, accountability, and integrity. And we will continue moving forward with clarity, purpose, and responsibility.

This move follows a broader wave of reactions across the San Diego and global BJJ scenes, where gyms and athletes have begun distancing themselves from Atos in response to allegations involving senior leadership.
Several academies have opened their doors to displaced athletes, while prominent figures have called for structural reform within the sport.
