Hollywood actor Jonah Hill had started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at around the age of 35…
And he did it because he felt it was time to develop new hobbies.
He spoke about it in a frank manner, explaining that otherwise he’d run into the danger of turning into a workaholic:
I hit a point in my life, early/mid-30s, when I was like – if I don’t start developing hobbies and sh*t, I’m going to end up as a dude who only likes to work.
And I could fall into the workaholic category. So I was like – wouldn’t it be cool that if the things I chose were the things that I was scared of my whole life?
So, the first one was Jiu-Jitsu.
With Jiu-Jitsu, Hill also started surfing – with both hobbies granting him a peace of mind:
I think that the hardest thing in the world to do is to be present, for me [at least].
And two things that I like to do, that if you are not present you will literally get f*cked up. So, it forces me to be present, both things. And in Jiu-Jitsu, you will definitely get choked out if you think about some thing you did two years ago that you’re bummed about.
He also explained that he’s aware that, when he rolls in another gym, that sometimes people want to “prove a point”:
I learned early on that, if I roll into a class, everyone wants the story of “I choked out Jonah Hill”.
