John Danaher Undergoes Hip Replacement Surgery

John Danaher, one of the most influential minds in Jiu-Jitsu, has undergone his second hip replacement surgery — a development that could mark a turning point in his coaching career.

Danaher shared the update on social media, writing:

Today I went into surgery for my second hip replacement.
I’ve had severe physical issues my whole career due to a crippled leg suffered from an early age.

The procedure didn’t come as a surprise to longtime followers of Danaher’s journey.
He had previously revealed plans for both hip and knee replacements in an interview with FloGrappling:

After the hip replacement I also have to do a knee replacement.
That would mean that I have three implants in my body which is usually, they recommend you don’t really do hard physical work after that.

Danaher has faced mounting physical challenges over the years, though he’s continued coaching at the highest levels despite them.

Following his first hip replacement seven years ago, he returned to the mats — a hopeful sign that he may yet do the same again.
In his recent post, he explained why he delayed this latest procedure:

I’ve been holding off on this second surgery for around four years. I was going to do after we left Puerto Rico but when the team broke up I had to delay it in order to be able to build a new team.

Now it’s time as I’m struggling to even walk and perform basic functions, let alone Jiu jitsu.
