John Danaher is encouraging grapplers to pay closer attention to their first impressions of technique.
Danaher points out something most practitioners have experienced at least once – some techniques feel awkward and nearly impossible when first attempted, leading many to believe they’ll never work.
But sometimes the opposite happens…
As the movement feels unexpectedly comfortable, smooth, and even intuitive:
I’m sure you’ve all had the experience of trying a new move and thinking to yourself: “There’s absolutely no way that move will ever work effectively for me!”
Have you ever had the opposite experience – where the first time you tried a move it seemed strangely natural and easy, at least relative to other moves?
This instinct, Danaher argues, is more meaningful than many realize.
While he is known for emphasizing fundamentals and systematic study, he believes that recognizing personal affinity for specific techniques is a key element of building a unique style:
Your first impressions are usually quite accurate.
Instead of constantly forcing techniques that feel unnatural, Danaher suggests investing time in exploring the ones that click early.
Over time, that first spark of comfort can grow into something far more important:
Recognizing and taking advantage of that affinity is an important part of constructing your game over time.
Whenever you feel that natural affinity make sure you invest some time in that move – given more time and experimentation, that promising introduction may lead to a signature move in your arsenal.
