For many practitioners, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grind defined by long hours on the mat, sore bodies, and the belief that sheer persistence will eventually lead to mastery.
But according to legendary coach John Danaher, that belief is only half true.
In a recent Instagram post, Danaher challenged the idea that effort by itself guarantees improvement…
Stressing that persistence must be paired with correct direction:
There is no question that persistence is a requirement to get to your goals, but understand that that persistence must be well directed.
Persistence while walking in the wrong direction just gets you more lost.
In other words, endless drilling and sparring don’t magically lead to improvement if your training lacks purpose.
He explained that persistence only becomes valuable after proper “navigation” has taken place:
Only when you have done enough navigational work does persistence pay off – now your persistence will be rewarded by arrival at your destination given enough time.
So don’t just hammer away in the gym and think that persistence alone will get you to your Jiu Jitsu destination.
Instead, he emphasized the importance of reflection and course correction:
You must take time occasionally to think about the direction of your journey and make sure that all your hard work is taking you in positive directions.
If the results you’re getting don’t seem to correlate with the effort you’re making and added time is not improving the situation – it’s time to analyze the steps and direction of your journey.
That analysis, he says, is what transforms persistence into something meaningful:
As you make changes you can check those against results and by this means start to navigate – and that’s when persistence truly becomes a virtue.
