John Danaher Explains The Skill That Separates Good Grapplers From Great Ones

John Danaher believes improvement in Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t end with new techniques – but that it begins with learning how to see.

In a recent reflection, the renowned coach described grappling not as a chaotic exchange of moves, but as a structured activity governed by repeating patterns.

According to him, athletes who recognize those patterns develop a completely different level of understanding:

The more patterns and regularities you observe, the better you will be able to anticipate and understand the game.

Danaher emphasized that Jiu-Jitsu appears complex only on the surface.
And that underneath…

Jiu Jitsu is a game with many observable regularities, our bodies exhibit much more significant similarities than they do differences.
The rules funnel our behavior down predictable channels.

Because of that, progress accelerates once practitioners stop thinking purely in individual techniques and begin organizing knowledge into broader concepts:

Soon you’ll be capable of summarizing these regularities into principles and heuristics and when your understanding rapidly improves, so will your performance.

For Danaher, one of the biggest leaps in development comes from recognizing both what works and what consistently fails:

Learning to recognize patterns of success and patterns of failure is one of the greatest advances you can make.
Learning to incorporate knowledge of those patterns into your movement will take this from theoretical knowledge to embodied skill.

He concluded with a distinction that he believes defines elite grapplers – awareness.
Many students watch positions unfold, but only a few truly interpret what is happening:

Remember – many people will look, but only a few will see. Make sure you’re one of the latter.
