Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is often praised for its mental benefits and technical depth, but Joe Rogan recently reminded fans of the sport’s unavoidable physical cost — especially for those who begin training later in life.
During a recent discussion, the longtime martial arts advocate highlighted just how taxing Jiu-Jitsu can be on the body over time:
What sport provides more patience than jiu-jitsu? Goodness.
Like everybody, you know, like if you think about it, when you get to a certain point and you’ve been training for a certain amount of time, you’re going to get sh*t banged up.
Like, what sport benefits more from guys in their 40s and 50s like peptides and stem cells?
It’s jiu-jitsu brings a lot of patience cuz everybody’s hurt.
Rogan underscored that injuries are practically universal among aging grapplers.
While average 40-year-olds might avoid serious physical issues in their daily routines, he pointed out that jiu-jitsu practitioners don’t have that luxury:
Everybody’s hurt. Regular 40 year old dudes aren’t hurt all the time, you know what I mean.
They usually work, they go into an office, they don’t rarely get knee injuries.
Knee injuries are rare.
40 year old jiu jitsu guys, everybody’s knees are fuc*ed up.
Everybody’s fuc*ed up.Everybody’s got a hurt shoulder, everybody, elbows fuc*ed up.
