In 2008, Jeremy Glick was posthumously awarded an Honorary 10th Degree black belt by the United States Judo Association, recognizing the actions he took aboard United Airlines Flight 93 during the September 11 attacks.
The plaque presented by the organization stated that Glick was promoted “for living the principle of judo, mutual welfare and benefit, and sacrificing his life for our country”.
Before 9/11, Glick had been a successful athlete and leader.
He was a National Collegiate Judo champion while attending the University of Rochester, where he also captained the rugby team and served as president of his fraternity chapter.
On September 11, 2001, Glick was aboard United Flight 93 after changing his travel plans from the previous day.
After hijackers took control of the plane, passengers began gathering information through phone calls and realized the scale of the attacks unfolding across the United States.
Glick’s final words to his wife, Lyzbeth, were: “We’re going to rush the hijackers.”
Passengers on Flight 93 are believed to have prevented the aircraft from reaching its intended target, widely believed to have been either the White House or the U.S. Capitol.
The plane ultimately crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, with no survivors.
His brother-in-law, Douglas Hurwitt, later said: “That was my brother-in-law. He was a take-charge guy.”
Glick was later awarded the Medal for Heroism by the Sons of the American Revolution and also received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in 2002.
