Jeff Glover, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend known for his unconventional style, spoke about using BJJ in self defense scenarios.
What’s more, he spoke from personal experience in an Instagram post…
Claiming that he has had plenty of it:
I can tell you from personal experience, all the really good fighters Jiu-Jitsu guys that I know have never really lost street fights.
I’ve been in at least 15 street fights. Pulled guard every time.
Never got stomped, never got slammed, always left the dude laying on the floor asleep.
Glover emphasizes that Jiu-Jitsu, i.e. getting the fight on the ground, is the cornerstone of successful self defense:
The idea of the guard is to prevent people from punching you in the face.
So getting somebody on the ground in a street fight is a way to stop people from punching you in the face.
He also spoke about the role of strength and physical advantage versus technique proficiency in self defense scenarios:
I don’t know that I agree with that…
I don’t know that I think physical attributes are more important than technique.
Sloth Jiu-Jitsu: you can be slow and unathletic and still kick butt in Jiu-Jitsu.
