IBJJF Issues Statement Following Athlete’s Death At Chicago Summer Open

The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) has expressed deep sorrow after an athlete tragically passed away during last weekend’s Chicago Summer Open tournament.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, the IBJJF confirmed the incident and called it an unprecedented loss:

The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) is profoundly saddened to confirm that an athlete passed away following a medical emergency at our Chicago event last Sunday.

The medical emergency occurred in the spectator area shortly after the competitor had completed their match.

According to the IBJJF, trained medical personnel, event staff, and first responders acted immediately to provide life-saving assistance:

IBJJF staff along with trained medical personnel and other qualified first responders acted immediately, utilizing all available life-saving techniques, equipment and medical protocols in an effort to assist.

The athlete was transported to a local hospital where medical teams continued treatment.
Despite the extensive efforts on-site and at the hospital, the competitor could not be revived:

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the athlete’s family, friends, teammates and all who were touched by his life.

This is a devastating loss for the entire jiu-jitsu community.

The federation reaffirmed its commitment to safety, stating that it will continue working with healthcare professionals and event staff to uphold rigorous medical protocols at all sanctioned competitions:

The IBJJF remains committed to the safety and well-being of all participants and attendees and we will continue working closely with medical professionals and event staff to uphold the highest standards of care at all our events.
