Here’s When You Should Slow Down The Pace – And Relax In A Jiu-Jitsu Match

The pace of a BJJ match can be extremely exhausting.

The scrambles, the constant pursuit of both submission and submission defence, can be extremely taxing on the body.
Which is why it’s important to understand and notice when you need to relax.

John Danaher understands the importance of relaxation at the proper time:

When you have attained a position that allows you to relax while at the same time puts your opponent into maximum physical and mental stress – take your time!

This is exactly the opportunity to make the clock work for you.

In other words, the moment to relax is when you can take advantage of the opponent’s exhaustion and preserve your own energy while doing so:

The most productive use of time in jiu jitsu is when you’ve created this asymmetry in work rate – that’s exactly when you can exhaust a tough opponent whilst preserving your own strength and endurance.

Learn to differentiate those times when you have to get to work and those where you can rest – that’s the key to both to extending your own endurance and reducing that of your opponent!
