Hector Lombard on How He Broke Josh Barnett’s Nose

Suspended UFC welterweight Hector Lombard will compete in August in the world’s biggest submission wrestling tournament: ADCC.

After testing positive for steroids following his win over Josh Burkman at UFC 182, Lombard was suspended for a year by the UFC.

The Cuba Judo champion and former Olympian was invited to compete in the ADCC and he has accepted the offer.

The UFC welterweight (77 kgs) will compete at the 99kg category! He will be facing big guys such as Dean Lister, Joao Assis and Xande Ribeiro. In 2013, Joao Assis won the weight class defeating Dean Lister by points in the final.

In his recent interview with Submission Radio , Lombard talks about his infamous gym incident with UFC Heavyweight Josh Barnett. Many people have often wondered how the beef between the two guys started and why they don’t like each other. Hector sheds light on how he perceived Josh’s attitude within the gym, the infamous hard sparring session at the CSW gym where Erik Paulson followed the fighters during their session, mopping up blood.

After their almost hour long session, Josh allegedly left the gym and ended up taking Hector down and pounding him during another sparring session.

Lombard told Bloodyelbow about their first sparring session where he broke Barnett’s nose:

I’ve never been intimidated by any man. I don’t care what the size of the man is, I’ve never been intimidated. I remember when I was young, back in school, and I would take on the biggest kid in school.

One day in training, we sparred for like 15 minutes, and I broke his (Barnett) nose. He was bleeding all over the place. He kind of got embarrassed about it. From that day on, he disliked me. So sometime later down the road, we were training again, and there was a lot of people there. I was doing change-ups, training with multiple guys, and he was there, waiting for me to get tired. Once he saw I got tired, he came and took me down and started beating the crap out of me. I felt like I was fighting for my life when he was on top of me.

IT ALL STARTED WITH THAT FIRST SPARRING SESSION WHERE I BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF HIM AND BROKE HIS NOSE. I REMEMBER THEY HAD TO HAVE SOMEONE COME AND CLEAN THE MAT BECAUSE HE BLED ALL OVER IT.
He had me scared, and I got out in an escape. After that, he stopped. That’s what happened. It all started with that first sparring session where I beat the crap out of him and broke his nose. I remember they had to have someone come and clean the mat because he bled all over it.
