Greg Souders Says Danaher’s Ideas Are Right – But His Application Is Wrong

Greg Souders has major respect for John Danaher – but he’s not afraid to point out what he sees as a critical flaw in the legendary coach’s approach:

His ideas are not wrong. His application is wrong.

He credits Danaher as a massive influence in his own coaching evolution.
However, a 2016 conversation changed everything.

When Souders asked how Danaher knows his systems are correct, the answer shocked him: he doesn’t.
Danaher admitted he uses trial and error and sometimes goes months in the wrong direction before adjusting. His message:

Learn how to be confident and trust your own ideas through the results you get.

That gave Souders the confidence to build his own methodology:

If a guy this smart thinks this, too, then it’s okay for me to think this.

Souders argues the difference lies in how ideas translate into actual training:

He’s a traditionalist…

I understand application better than he understands application.

He emphasizes this isn’t disrespect:

There are things he says that I disagree with, but I think the work he’s done has pushed this sport forward.

I would love to engage him intellectually in public.
