Greg Souders: “Developing Elite Children in BJJ Is Abuse”

Greg Souders, a leading voice in the constraint-led approach to coaching in BJJ, made a blunt statement about pushing kids toward elite-level performance.

Here is what he had to say in a recent podcast appearance:

To me, developing elite children is abuse.

He backed the claim with research and years of coaching experience:

This seems to suggest that early childhood broad experiences prepare the student for later level specific experiences…
And the elites usually choose their sport themselves around 15 to 16 years old. That’s what the evidence shows.

For Souders, the underlying issue is parental projection, something he described as:

A mistake that parents make because they can’t get over the failures that they had.

Children pushed into intense training by adults may show early signs of elite ability, but…

It doesn’t necessarily mean that that early elite behavior that you’re calling elite is going to stick as they age, because they’ll change once they hit puberty, and they’ll change once different things in life become more meaningful to them.

He tied the argument back to genuine desire as the real driver of skill:

You can only be as good as you desire to be. If your desire is diminished and you’re forcing it, you’re never going to be as good.

As an example, Souders referenced Josh Waitzkin’s book The Art of Learning. Waitzkin, a talented young chess player, hit a point of serious burnout around age 11, prompting his father to impose a firm rule: no chess over the summer, just time as a kid at the lake:

Even though at first it frustrated Josh, he came to appreciate it later in life, because he realized how healthy the behavior was from his father.
