Biaggio Ali Walsh – the grandson of boxing legend Muhammad Ali – suffered a dramatic setback in his young MMA career at PFL 7…
As he was choked unconscious by Ronnie Gibbs in the second round.
Ali Walsh came into the bout with hype behind him.
Though only in his third professional fight, he’d already built a 6-fight finishing streak as an amateur under the PFL banner.
He’d made his pro debut just over a year ago with a decision win at PFL vs Bellator and followed it up with a knockout.
While striking was always his strong suit, he’d clearly been working to round out his game.
Ironically, however, it was grappling that first humbled him – Ali Walsh was submitted in his very first amateur fight.
But after that, he ran through six opponents, all by stoppage, proving he was a fast learner.
Ronnie Gibbs, however, was no easy assignment. Also 6-1 as an amateur, Gibbs had power in his hands and two submission wins in his amateur run.
He’d just made his pro debut a few months prior with a knockout, and he was looking to make a statement.
Still, Ali Walsh came in as the favorite – and nearly made it look easy.
He dropped Gibbs in the opening minute and seemed in full control through the first round. He even stuffed a takedown attempt late, showing his improved wrestling.
But things took a sharp turn in round two.
Ali Walsh was using his jab effectively when Gibbs timed a clean takedown and began unloading ground and pound from half guard.
With elbows landing and pressure mounting, Gibbs locked up an Arm Triangle choke – and this time, Ali Walsh didn’t tap.
The finish came when the referee realized Ali Walsh had gone unconscious, ending the bout and giving Gibbs the biggest win of his career.
