Ralph Gracie was hoping to keep his incident under wraps – as per the statement he released against the advice of his attorneys.
Ralph Gracie’s Attorney James Cook contacted BJJEE and released the following statement:
I am the attorney who intends to represent Ralph Gracie in the event there are subsequent legal disputes. I reviewed the video and I had an opportunity to discuss the incident with Ralph Gracie. Ralph would like to tell his side of the story about events leading up to the altercation. However, I strongly advised him to say nothing.
I cannot disclose too many details about Ralph’s side of the story given attorney-client considerations. However, I can say that the video does not capture the full spectrum of words and actions leading up to the incident. To view the video within the full context, it is easy to conclude that altercation should be characterized as mutual combat.
It’s worth noting that the incident took place at a combat sporting event, where the spectators are usually competitors. As such, the line between regulated competition and real-life competition is often blurred. Frequently, emotions run high and the contest continues off the mats and after the buzzer. Flavio Almeia and Ralph Gracie are iconic competitors and instructors for our sport. They are not strangers to off-the-mat confrontations. I believe that any further dispute can and should be resolved quickly and without court intervention.
According to latest reports Gracie is actually under investigations and cops are involved. MMA fighting confirmed:
Ralph Gracie, a longtime MMA fighter, jiu-jitsu practitioner and coach, is under investigation for felony battery stemming from an incident involving fellow coach Flavio Almeida at the World IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship in Anaheim, Calif., last weekend, according to Anaheim Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Daron Wyatt.
A report was taken and the investigation is ongoing, Wyatt stated. The situation, which took place at Anaheim Convention Center, has not yet been presented to the district attorney for any filing of criminal charges, he said.
MMA/BJJ website Tatame has revealed that Gracie Barra, where Flávio is the chief executive behind the team’s development in North America, revealed that a court order was issued to Ralph Gracie, and that Ralph can not approach Flavio, his residence or place of work, and must remain about 91 meters away.
Check out the full statement:
“A court order has been issued by the California Superior Court ordering Ralph Gracie not to approach Flavio Almeida, his residence, or place of employment. It should be kept at 100 yards (about 91 meters) away.
If this determination of justice is disregarded, the offender may be criminally charged. The penalty may be one year in prison, $ 1,000 bail, or both together.
A hearing was also scheduled by the US court on 11/01 at 9 am. The documents are public, and a copy can be found in the California Superior Court file, located at North Justice Center 1275 N. Berkeley Avenue, Fullerton, CA 92838, Tel. +1 (657) 622-5720.
Flávio Almeida is the chief executive behind Gracie Barra’s development in North America, he was violently attacked by several individuals while assisting one of his students during the IBJJF’s No-Gi World Championship in California. This attack caused serious injuries to the head, neck, face, teeth and neurological damage to Flavio, such as memory loss, the extent of which is still being evaluated by doctors.
The police are investigating, the doctors who are taking care of Flavio advised him to rest with the family and recover from the wounds, as soon as he is fit, to return to work. We thank you very much for your concern. We’ll share more information when the time is right. ”
Ralph Gracie doesn’t seem too bothered by it as we can see on his instagram post:
