In a recent seminar, Gordon Ryan delivered a simple – but striking – insight that every serious grappler needs to hear:
The number one thing that destroys progression is boredom.
For all the talk in Jiu-Jitsu about discipline, drilling, and doing the hard reps, Ryan points out a far more dangerous (and overlooked) enemy to improvement: losing interest in your training.
He describes a common scenario where athletes are told to focus on mastering one area for an extended period, only to burn out in the process:
If I tell you, hey, you need to get good at Triangles, and you spend the next one year practicing Triangles, you’re like, freaking bored of Triangles. And then the next thing you know, you’re like, okay, well, I don’t really want to learn Triangles anymore. Then you miss a class here, you miss a class there, then the boredom takes over and you’re just not training as much.
Ryan believes this rigid, over-structured approach is where many students go wrong.
It fails to account for something essential to long-term success – staying mentally engaged.
In his view, the best progress happens not when students force themselves through months of repetition, but when they’re genuinely interested in what they’re working on.
That doesn’t mean ignoring fundamentals, though. Ryan emphasizes that strong defense is non-negotiable.
But once that foundation is laid, he encourages students to follow their curiosity and let it guide their development.
