Gordon Ryan Talks Strained Relationship With Mikey Musumeci: “I Never Had Anything Against Him”

Gordon Ryan recently explained why he felt compelled to respond to Mikey Musumeci’s comments about performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in BJJ.

Specifically, during the UFC 310 media day, Musumeci had claimed that PED use is rampant in the sport – estimating that “99 percent” of athletes, including Ryan, are using them.
Ryan’s response, which included calling Musumeci a “dork”, sparked widespread discussion.

Ryan recently explained that he was, in a way, surprised by Musumeci’s callouts.
And that they were always nice to each other beforehand:

I woke up and he was just attacking me.

I’ve trained with Mikey before and we’ve always been nice to one another, and I actually talked pretty positively about him on [The Joe Rogan Experience] when I was on there…

I’ve never had anything against Mikey, but he always has my name in his rants about steroids and things like that.

Ryan explained that he was trying to ignore it all for a while, but at one point could not take it anymore:

He’ll say my name, then he’ll be like: “These guys aren’t athletes”
Or: “These guys are mentally weak”, or whatever the case is.

So I let it go for a while and he just kept on attacking me and attacking me.
So I was like: “OK, if we’re going to play that game, let’s play that game.”
