Gordon Ryan Shares How Training With AJ Agazarm Saved Him From Quitting BJJ

In a lighthearted conversation on Jake Shields’ podcast, Gordon Ryan shared an unexpected story about how AJ Agazarm inadvertently reignited his motivation during a tough day of training.

Ryan recalled a particularly rough period shortly after earning his purple belt.
During an intense training session, he was submitted repeatedly – “like 12 times in the span of a six-minute round” – leaving him completely demoralized:

I went out and I was just, like, sitting depressed all day.

I was with Garry. Garry‘s, like, what’s wrong?
I’m, like, I’m done with this.

Like, I don’t even know why I’m doing this anymore.

Just when Ryan was doubting his future in the sport, AJ Agazarm arrived at the gym for the afternoon session.
At the time, Agazarm was preparing for the Pan Ams, but he unknowingly became the reason Ryan found his competitive fire again:

The only thing that saved me that day was AJ Agazarm’s arm coming into the gym.
AJ doesn’t tap in training, and I just completely blew his shoulder apart.

So I beat up AJ – and I was, like: “Okay, I’m back.”
