Gordon Ryan Shares Health Update: “I Would Compete Until I Was 40”

Gordon Ryan recently shared an update regarding his health, detailing the severe stomach issues that have plagued him since 2018.

Speaking on Jake Shields’ podcast, Ryan opened up about how a series of staph infections and repeated antibiotic treatments triggered the problems that have since impacted his training and competition:

I had a staph infection and took antibiotics.
Then I got staph again and took more antibiotics.

On the 10th day, I got super nauseous and I’ve been nauseous ever since.

Ryan revealed that, at its worst, his condition made him incredibly vulnerable to infections, with even stepping on the mats without immediately cleaning himself potentially leading to another staph outbreak.
In 2018, he estimated he spent nearly 200 days on antibiotics.

After years of minimal improvement through conventional medicine, Ryan finally found some relief through a holistic doctor in Los Angeles.
However, setbacks like a 45-day battle with antibiotic-resistant strep throat derailed his recovery – causing his stomach to worsen again.

He noted that his 2024 ADCC training camp was particularly difficult…
With his stomach issues limiting him to just 18 solid training sessions in the final 10 days before the event:

This was definitely the hardest camp I’ve ever done.

Ryan’s future in competition hinges on resolving his stomach issues.
For now, his focus is on healing and launching his new BJJ school in Austin, Texas, in the coming months:

If my stomach just got better I would compete until I was like 40.
