Galvao: ‘From 1 to 10, Sonnen’s Jiu-Jitsu is a 4 ‘

Galvao: ‘From 1 to 10, Sonnen’s Jiu-Jitsu is a 4 ‘

After his victory over Chael Sonnen in Metamoris IV, Andre Galvao talked to Tatame about how the fight went and how he rates Sonnen’s Jiu-Jitsu:

“You are a collector of titles and have faced the top names in the history of Jiu-Jitsu. What do you have to say about this victory over Sonnen?

I love fighting, it’s my job. It is what God gave me, it’s my livelihood. It could not have been better. This victory means a lot to me and to the Brazilian nation. When I decided to set the pace, everything flowed very well. I got the rear naked choke and give the victory to Brazil.

What was the secret to adjusting the position?

The body triangle was essential to keep me there.  Chael is a great wrestler, I knew he could escape if I did not close the triangle. I had patience to adjust the rear-naked choke at the right time.

Sonnen resisted for 14 minutes. Were you surprised that he lasted for so long?

Not. I was not in a hurry. I could finish it at the last second, which would still winning anyway. I tried to feel him a bit to see what was going through his head. What I should do would be according to the time of the fight. I felt Sonnen in closed guard, half, butterfly, and back. I knew he would work on top and know that wrestlers have a good base. Then, I just waited for the right time to start applying my game.

How would you rate his Jiu-Jitsu?

From one to ten, I’d rate four. He does not do Jiu-Jitsu, more trains to defend himself or to stay in dominant positions in MMA. But if he trained, it would be very hard. He is athletic, strong and has a very good body type. I would like to thank him for accepting this fight.

Did you talk to him after? What did you say?

Yes, we talked. He told me that the body triangle made his body ache (laughs). And I told him that bad guys do not last. His words are: “Bad times do not last. But the bad guys do”. Then I said that was wrong, that bad times do not last, and bad guys do not (laughs). Only the good guys last forever.

What are the plans for the rest of the year?

I have some appointments with my team, seminars and affiliates.  Now, I want to find a better place for my academy and organizing the team. I’ll focus more on that.”
