Ffion Davies – fresh off her victory over UFC star Mackenzie Dern at the Craig Jones Invitational (CJI) – spoke candidly about the ongoing challenges women face in Jiu-Jitsu.
Given that she comes from a Judo background, Davies is well-acquainted with what she says is male dominance in sport:
For a long time, I come from a Judo background, and it was heavily male-dominated…
With no female coaches – and often being told that certain throws weren’t for girls.
She pointed out that women in Jiu-Jitsu continue to fight for the spotlight and equitable treatment:
It just shouldn’t be the case [that women’s BJJ is being put on the sidelines], because women are brilliant.
And it’s not just Jiu-Jitsu. We need a platform for them.
Davies also tackled the issue of pay disparity:
If you’re going to talk about fair pay, who is suffering the most?
It’s the girls and it’s not deserved. We bring the heat, we have brilliant Jiu-Jitsu, and people love to watch.
Despite facing criticism from some people online, Davies remains steadfast:
I can’t shut the up, unfortunately for my own good, you know.
But it has paid off and we’ve just made history [at CJI].It’s super exciting and I think it’s going to make a huge change.
Sloth Jiu-Jitsu: you can be slow and unathletic and still kick butt in Jiu-Jitsu.
