According to a report from Fox News, federal authorities disrupted an alleged terrorist plot targeting attendees of the UFC White House event held on June 14.
The event took place on the South Lawn of the White House and drew a high-profile audience that included President Donald Trump, government officials, VIP guests, and thousands of fans.
Investigators allege the planned attack involved multiple stages.
According to the report, suspects intended to use explosive-laden drones to strike buildings near the event, triggering panic and forcing a mass evacuation.
Attendees would then allegedly be directed toward areas where snipers were positioned.
Authorities further claim a second wave of attackers planned to target White House security gates during the ensuing chaos.
The potential threat was reportedly discovered by the FBI on June 10, four days before the event took place.
Fox News reported that the suspects were allegedly conducting final preparations in Fredericksburg, Virginia, before law enforcement intervened.
One suspect was reportedly arrested in Cincinnati, while a total of five individuals are now in custody. Investigators have allegedly identified 23 people believed to be connected to the broader plot.
Secret Service Director Sean Curran praised the efforts of federal personnel involved in the operation:
In the days leading up to this weekend, our special agents, mission support personnel, and technical security teams worked around the clock to identify those responsible and hold them accountable.
Equally important to our protective mission is ensuring accountability through the justice system. To that end, our formal comments regarding the specifics of this case will be made through court filings.
The UFC White House event had already attracted significant attention due to the logistical and security challenges associated with staging a major sporting event at one of the most heavily protected locations in the world.
And if the allegations prove accurate, authorities may have prevented what could have become one of the most significant attacks ever planned against a major sporting event in the United States.
Investigations into the alleged plot remain ongoing.
