Diogo “Baby Shark” Reis’ path to the global spotlight was shaped long before medals, contracts, or packed arenas entered the picture.
Growing up in Manaus, Brazil, Reis developed his Jiu-Jitsu in an environment defined by limitations rather than resources, relying almost entirely on discipline and mental resilience to progress.
Reflecting on that foundation, Reis has been clear about what he believes separates him from others at the elite level:
What makes me different from the other athletes is my mind.
Since I was a kid, I didn’t have big gyms or extra teachers.
I’ve reached this level of Jiu-Jitsu with the minimum things. Now I have all this support, so if I did all of that without it, [I know] I can go to the next level.
That mentality carried him through Brazil’s toughest competitions, across the United States, and eventually into the upper echelon of professional grappling.
Despite winning multiple world titles and establishing himself as one of the most consistent competitors of his generation, Reis doesn’t view his achievements as a finish line:
I’m very young. I’m only 23.
I know I can [achiev] more. I’m only starting to build my legacy.I’m only in the beginning of everything.
So I have a big way until I become a legend in the sport.
With over 90 career victories, Reis embraces pressure as proof that his work is meaningful, not burdensome:
This is the consequence of my hard work.
I’m a guy who doesn’t sit and do nothing – I let my work talk for me.Being in ONE now is a big opportunity. So I can show my skills to the world.
